Also, I'll talk about something that pretty much threads itself through whatever I do as an artist- a sense of Wonder. The belief in the imagination, the divine/otherworldly, human will, technological progress.
We talk to friends, communicate by email, and purchase necessities through a medium and means that most Americans could not even imagine about, let alone think of.
Some of you may have heard of this tidbit- We now have, at our fingertips, everyday devices that have more processing power than the device NASA first used to send a space shuttle to the moon. Thing is, most people with these machines do not have the processing power (training, IQ, experiences, etc) of the original people that sent that rocket into outer space. It's quite possible to get around and live life on much less. However, I think that what most separates an ordinary person from a creator is having a sense of curiosity about what makes things work. There's no way to make sure we all have curiosity, but at least we can be sensible to the enormous changes that are taking place around us, changing how we talk and interact.
The instant talking and sharing has led to a huge cultural shift. "Email", "Facebook", "IPhone", etc. are everyday words that did not exist 30 years ago. With the new ability to share thoughts and ideas, comes a brand new vocabulary to help describe them. Technologically, the same has yet to happen for art. Most interactions concern themselves on an analog platform still, like painting, drawing, slides, etc. Instagram is a great artists network, but is by no means ubiquitous. As artists and lovers of art, we need to see more sharing in the art world- more things and ways to wonder at something. There has to be some way to improve on our ability, as artists, to establish an instant connecting to faraway cultures and fresh ideas (or at least, perspective).
This sense of wonder is something that I want to share with every piece I make- that there are worlds that are created with the strength of ideas and will, and not just physical space and limits that are seen by the naked eye. As an artist, it makes me happy to share that message with as many people as I can.
